Gilbert, who has stayed true to his own small-town roots in Georgia even as he’s become a popular country performer, co-wrote “What Happens in a Small Town” with Brock Berryhill, Josh Dunne, and Rhett Atkins. More than a reflection on how quickly word gets around in a close-knit community, the song dwells on the inescapable memories that come with a broken heart, the pain of which are brought to life by Gilbert’s forlorn delivery.

After we finished writing it, [we went] into the whole, “Okay, well, who’s the right match to do the duet?” It was my first male-female duet, and it had to be right. If you know me, you know I’m kind of obsessive compulsive, about everything. So a lot of thought went into it. I was talking to Scott one day, and he brought up Lindsay’s name, and it just clicked … I made him call and ask Lindsay, because I was scared she’d tell me no.

What Happens In A Small Town – Brantley Gilbert + Lindsay Ell

[Verse 1: Brantley]
I can’t go for a ride to clear my head
‘Cause everything I pass puts you back in it
Yeah we’re done, movin’ on
But you can’t be too far gone

[Chorus: BG & LE]
‘Cause what happens in a small town stays in a small town
Every back road, we’ve ever gone down
Friday night bleachers, Sunday pews
Ain’t a county line mile without a memory of you
Every whisper, every room, I walk in
Every time the bartender fills it up again
Everybody knows why I’m here, and you ain’t around
‘Cause what happens in a small town, stays in a small town

[Verse 2: Lindsay]
Oh we said this goodbye was the last
I guess I could leave, I could run from the past
And from us, and from you

[Dual Harmony]
But this is where I belong, this is my home too

[Chorus: BG & LE]
What happens in a small town stays in a small town
Every back road, we’ve ever gone down
Friday night bleachers, Sunday pews
Ain’t a county line mile without a memory of you
Every whisper, every room, I walk in
Every time the bartender fills it up again
Everybody knows why I’m here, and you ain’t around
‘Cause what happens in a small town, stays in a small town

[Brantley]
Yeah I’m still here, yeah
And every time I see that little white Jeep

[Lindsay]
Yeah that hand-me-down Ford pullin’ down your street

[Dual Harmony]
You wonder if somebody’s in my seat
If you’re movin’ on or you’re stuck like me

[Brantley]
What happens in a small town

[Lindsay]
Stays in a small town

[Brantley]
(Oh yeah)

[Chorus: BG & LE]
What happens in a small town stays in a small town
Every back road, we’ve ever gone down
Friday night bleachers, Sunday pews
Ain’t a county line mile without a memory of you
Every whisper, every room, I walk in
Every time the bartender fills it up again
Everybody knows why I’m here, and you ain’t around
(You ain’t around)
‘Cause what happens in a small town, stays in a small town

[Outro: BG & LE]
It stays in a small town
It stays in a small town
And I’m still here
(what happens in a small town)
I’m still here
(Stays in a small town)
I’m still here
Yeah I’m still here
I’m still here
