According to Take a Daytrip, the guitar lick for “Rodeo” was introduced during Lil Nas X‘s first studio session ever. The song’s chorus was the first part they completed, which was posted to the singer’s Instagram before the rest of the song was finished, and drew three million views within two days. A solo version of it was completed a month and a half later in New York CityCardi B‘s verse was a late addition to “Rodeo”, which Lil Nas X texted to the producers when they “were in the studio working on something else”.

Lil Nas X revealed the song’s name as part of the tracklist for his debut EP 7 (2019). Cardi B’s appearance on it was not announced until the EP’s release on June 21, 2019. “Rodeo” samples a guitar riff, described by Uproxx as “a harder rock-oriented loop” similar to Heart‘s “Barracuda” (1977), “and finds Lil Nas X leaning into his country trap vocal to censure a romantic flame for her dependence on his largesse”.

Retaining the rising artist’s country-trap style with twanging guitars, “Rodeo” boasts his EP’s only feature other than Billy Ray Cyrus —  mega-star Cardi B, who enters for an energetic verse about ninety seconds in. Of course, the song arrives accompanied by a video featuring futuristic cowboys.

“Rodeo” brings more of a hip hop vibe with Cardi’s aggressive rap addition, but with only two verses, there’s much to be left for listeners. 7 itself doesn’t follow any conventional method as Lil Nas X created an album with an assortment of genre-flavors, so it can only be expected that each track follows suit. In a chat with Zane Lowe for Apple Music Beats 1, Lil Nas X talked about 7 and what it means for him as an artist. “With this, I want you to make sure you’re listening to every single thing,” he said. “You can’t just listen and be on your phone the whole time because you might miss something.”

[Intro: Nessly]
Daytrip took it to 10 (Hey)

[Chorus: Lil Nas X]
Oh, here we go, please let me know
Oh, ‘fore you go, don’t leave me in the cold

[Verse 1: Lil Nas X]
If I took you everywhere, then well, you wouldn’t know how to walk
If I spoke on your behalf, then well, you wouldn’t know how to talk
If I gave you everything and everything is what I bought
I can take it all back, I never cared ’bout what you thought
I didn’t mean to make you mad, I don’t like when you upset
I’ma call you later on, baby girl, don’t you forget
I’ma take you from this party, we might go and have some sex
Or we do that later on, now we lit like cigarettes

[Pre-Chorus: Lil Nas X]
I thought you would stay with me
I’m yours and you’re mine, I envy
So what I’m gon’ do?
I don’t have no clue, ain’t no me without you

[Chorus: Lil Nas X]
Oh, here we go, please let me know
Oh, ‘fore you go, don’t leave me in the cold

[Refrain: Lil Nas X & Cardi B]
If I took you everywhere, then well, you wouldn’t know how to walk
If I spoke on your behalf, then well, you wouldn’t know how to talk
If I gave you everything and everything is what I bought
I can take it all back, I never cared ’bout what you thought (Cardi)

[Verse 2: Cardi B]
Look, gunshot, gunshot
Thought you heard about me, must not, must not
Last nigga did me dirty, dirty
Like a bathroom in a truck stop, truck stop
Now my heart, it feels like Brillo, I’m hard like armadillo
Can’t be no nigga ex, I could only be his widow
That’s a fact, dressed in black, my heart break, bones will crack
I be chilling, watching Oxygen, my favorite show is Snapped
Now you know how I get, every day, a foreign whip
Rather see you in a hearse than see you with some other bitch
Huh?

[Chorus: Lil Nas X]
Oh, here we go, please let me know
Oh, ‘fore you go, don’t leave me in the cold

[Refrain: Lil Nas X]
If I took you everywhere, then well, you wouldn’t know how to walk
If I spoke on your behalf, then well, you wouldn’t know how to talk
If I gave you everything and everything is what I bought
I can take it all back, I never cared ’bout what you thought

[Outro: Lil Nas X]
I thought you would stay with me
I’m yours and you’re mine, I envy
So what I’m gon’ do?
I don’t have no clue, ain’t no me without you
