A tale of heartbreak that begins as a stripped back piano ballad but builds into a back-and-forth of blame shifting of a relationship in decay, voiced in a duet between Sam Margin and co-writer Sarah Aarons, a highly decorated musician who who was named the APRA Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year on Tuesday.

The band went into the studio with no expectations. In their mind, the album was done and whatever came out of the session would be an experiment in collaboration, something new for the band, or, much like Sarah’s long list of songwriting credits (LDRU/ZEDD & Alessia Cara/Dua Lipa/Jesse Ware), something for another artist to use.

Anna Phillip, Director, said of the video; “This track really speaks for itself. It’s a simple yet poignant story that many people can relate to from either side. That’s where the idea of a split screen came into play. We felt it was important to be able to follow and visualise both parts equally. I think at times we go through these sorts of nights (when relationships are breaking down) wondering whether our other half are doing, thinking and feeling the same things we are… in this story they are. Sam and Madeleine are both incredibly captivating performers and Sam and Sarah’s vocals are equally as strong. We wanted to make sure you could watch both of these character’s experiences unfold in their entirety, not just when they were singing, but also the space between. Why make one music video when you can make two!”

The song’s R’n’B melody and laid-back hip-hop groove earned the Menangle five-piece a surprise No.1 spot in the triple j Hottest 100 of 2015 and guaranteed an ARIA gold album.
The temptation would have been to travel to the US and work with a big-name producer for album No.3, but instead The Rubens bunkered down in a literal World War II bunker in south-west Sydney with Brooklyn hip-hop producers Wilder Zoby and ‘Lil Shalimar.

You may not have realised it, but there is no escaping the work of 23-year-old Melbourne songwriter Sarah Aarons. Her name might not be familiar to you – unless you still buy CDs and read all the liner notes – but her songs are constantly bookending the radio ad breaks on both sides of the Pacific.

With what will later signpost the beginning of her mainstream recognition, her US Platinum-selling co-write ‘Stay’ for Zedd and Alessia Cara has spent three weeks at #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart.

[Verse 1: Sam Margin & Sarah Aarons]
I never ever, I never ever meant to catch you in a lie
You never ever, you never ever had the heart to say it right

[Pre-Chorus: Sam Margin & Sarah Aarons]
With my phone turned off, it makes no sound
But you said you needed space
‘Cause your phone’s turned off, I come around
‘Cause I just need to say

[Chorus: Both]
I swear I never ever, but that’s just what you do
When you love somebody, love someone
I could try to make it better, but that’s just how it is
When you hurt somebody, love someone

[Verse 2: Sam Margin & Sarah Aarons]
But I like you better from afar
I think we’re better off apart
You called it payback
You only say that with my brother in your bed
You think you’re clever
Would I be better fucking someone else instead?

[Pre-Chorus: Sam Margin & Sarah Aarons]
With my phone turned off, it makes no sound
But I still hear your voice
‘Cause you’re so turned off, I come around
‘Cause you leave me no choice

[Chorus: Both]
I swear I never ever, but that’s just what you do
When you love somebody, love someone
I could try to make it better, but that’s just how it is
When you hurt somebody, love someone

[Bridge: Sam Margin, Sarah Aarons & (Both)]
(I like you better)
I’m feeling better already, you’d do better to forget me
(I like you better)
Right from the moment you left me, now it don’t bother me any

[Chorus: Sarah Aarons & Both]
I swear I never ever, but that’s just what you do
When you love somebody, love someone
I could try to make it better, but that’s just how it is
When you hurt somebody, love someone
I swear I never ever, but that’s just what you do
When you love somebody, love someone
I could try to make it better, but that’s just how it is
When you hurt somebody, love someone
I swear I never ever, but that’s just what you do
When you love somebody, love someone
I could try to make it better, but that’s just how it is
When you hurt somebody, love someone

[Outro: Both]
I think you broke my fucking heart
