Jhené Aiko returned on Wednesday (May 8) with her first offering of 2019 in the form of the emotive “Triggered” freestyle. A dark accompanying visual sees the 31-year-old staring into the abyss while pouring her soul out around some rocky terrain.
Following its release, Aiko shared more about the song saying it was “a moment that for me has passed. it is new to you because ur just now hearing it, but for me… it’s something i moved on from the moment i expressed it.”
Last year, Aiko broke up with the rapper Big Sean and got her giant tattoo of his face covered up. They had dated for years and released music together under the name Twenty88. Last month, she took to Instagram to affirm that she still cares about him, writing, “i love you beyond measure. even tho i get big mad and u trigger the fuck out of me. u make me feel. and i appreciate that.
‘”‘Triggered’ was a moment. a moment that for me has passed. it is new to you because ur just now hearing it, but for me… it’s something i moved on from the moment i expressed it,” she explained. “Triggered is NOT a diss song. it is a moment of talking sh*t out of frustration and passion.
The song is her form of self-expression and helped her relieve stress. “this is how I paint,” she tweeted. “this is me yelling and throwing paint at a canvas… then going out into the world feeling less tension, more open… more loving. going to bed feeling less stressed, more optimistic.”
While the Californian claims that Sean is not her target, he is not concerned about the lyrics at all, our source tells us. “Sean is not upset about Jhene’s song,” the insider says. “She let him hear it in advance and he has nothing but love for the song and for her. He admires Jhene so much as an artist. He’d never try to get in the way of that or hold her back.”
