It’s Nice To Have A Friend – Taylor Swift | Lover make their way to the top 10

In an interview with Vogue, she called her seventh studio album “a new beginning … a love letter to love, in all of its maddening, passionate, exciting, enchanting, horrific, tragic, wonderful glory.”

Despite aims at inconspicuousness — or more likely, largely because of them — “It’s Nice to Have a Friend” is the most captivating song on Taylor Swift’s seventh album, ‘Lover.’
“It’s Nice to Have a Friend” is the most captivating song on Lover. It’s the rare Swift song that suggests more than it implies, that punctuates with commas and ellipses rather than exclamation marks and hard periods, and its delicate, crystalline beauty is unlike anything we’ve heard from Swift before. (Even “Delicate.”)

Taylor Swift liked the song “Summer in the South” by students from Toronto’s Regent Park School of Music so much that she used the track on her “Lover” song “It’s Nice to Have a Friend,” featuring some RPSM students on the tune.

“It’s Nice To Have A Friend is one of the most unique songs off of the album Stop paying it to dust Its one of those songs that reminds me of middle school and can be a soundtrack on a becoming-of-age film,” wrote a fan on Twitter.
The CBC reports that the song samples music played by the Toronto youth program, Regent Park School of Music. Not only are the actual students playing on the record, but all proceeds from the song will go toward the program itself. In addition, if “It’s Nice to Have a Friend” is sampled, money from both those clearances and royalties will also go back toward funding the school.

Lover offers plenty of evidence that Swift is just a better songwriter than any of her competitors in the upper echelons of pop, but its something-for-everyone approach feels like consolidation, not progress, designed to keep Swift as one of the world’s biggest stars without provoking the kind of backlash that led her to start evoking the end of days in her diary.

“It’s Nice To Have a Friend” is a sweet moment of childhood innocence, until the chorus evokes Michael Kiwanuka’s “Cold Little Heart” and you worry about who Taylor and her pal are going to murder Big Little Lies-style. “The Man” carries a strong message about male privilege and sounds more like Haim than the latest song by Haim.

This ballad is strangely haunting, considering the straightforward title — maybe it’s the constant repetition of “it’s nice to have a friend” while a chorus chants “oooohhhh oohhhh” in the background. Although the line “something gave you the nerve to touch my hand” makes it seem as if the subject of the song is more than just a friend.

All 18 songs featured on Swift’s new album have made their way to the Hot 100, a rare accomplishment, even for the biggest names in the industry.

It’s Nice To Have A Friend – Taylor Swift

[Verse 1]
School bell rings, walk me home
Sidewalk chalk covered in snow
Lost my gloves, you give me one
“Wanna hang out?” Yeah, sounds like fun
Video games, you pass me a note
Sleeping in tents

It’s nice to have a friend (Ooh)
It’s nice to have a friend (Ooh)

[Verse 2]
Light pink sky, up on the roof
Sun sinks down, no curfew
20 questions, we tell the truth
You’ve been stressed out lately, yeah, me too
Something gave you the nerve
To touch my hand

It’s nice to have a friend (Ooh)
It’s nice to have a friend (Ooh)

[Instrumental bridge]

[Verse 3]
Church bells ring, carry me home
Rice on the ground looks like snow
Call my bluff, call you “Babe”
Have my back, yeah, every day
Feels like home, stay in bed
The whole weekend

It’s nice to have a friend (Ooh)
It’s nice to have a friend (Ooh)
It’s nice to have a friend (Ooh)
