“I think we’ll see more of this,” says Eric Hurt, vice president of A&R for the Nashville division of independent hip-hop label / distributor Empire. “… We just need amazing songs, engaging content, and artists willing to say,‘ Why not? Let’s try it!

“Hard to Forget,” Webb Pierce’s new sample song by country singer Sam Hunt, whose album Southside represents the first type of country music, for a commercial genre incorporating hip-hop production for the past decade.
“Hard to Forget” ranked in the top 20 on both Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs.
MCA released “Hard to Forget” on country radio via PlayMPE on March 2, and is already at number 18 on Country Airplay and number 17 on Hot Country Songs.

Makin’ Tracks: Sam Hunt’s ‘Hard to Forget,’ A Combination of Something Old & Something New

With “Hard to Forget,” Sam Hunt has given country fans a track that lives up to its title, likely to be remembered for both its progressive sound and its instant country history lesson.

“I think we’ll see more of this,” says Eric Hurt, vice president of A&R for the Nashville division of independent hip-hop label / distributor Empire. “… We just need amazing songs, engaging content, and artists willing to say,‘ Why not? Let’s try it! Country music is about to enter a new phase of creativity … “Hard to Forget,” by Sam Hunt is an excellent example. “
Mixed reactions extend to Webb Pierce’s family, who had not realized the song existed until Rolling Stone Country contacted them. While Pierce’s son Webb Pierce Jr. praises the song’s ability, Pierce’s granddaughter Audra Hillis finds her use of her father’s signature tune “jarring.”

Story Behind the Song: Sam Hunt, ‘Hard to Forget’

Sam Hunt co-wrote his song “Hard to Forget” with Ashley Gorley, Josh Osborne, Luke Laird and Shane McAnally, but there are also three additional names credited as writers: Autry Greisham, Mary Jean Shurtz and Russ Hull, the co-writers of Webb Pierce’s “There Stands the Glass.”

Hunt worked with McAnally and Osborne to adapt the title to the new sample. They drew the chorus tune and some lyrics, then Hunt gathered the four cowriters together for a concentrated day of work. The chorus became a lyrical puzzle, with inspiring references from “There Stands the Glass” to other traditional country songs – “Cold, Cold Heart” and “Cold Hard Truth” – and plenty of additional puns.

Cody Jinks Goes off On Sam Hunt’s “Hard To Forget”

Cody Jinks rarely casts stones, and isn’t inclined to spout off against pop country unless the situation is really called for. That happened to be the case when he made a recent visit to the dentist, and was exposed to the Sam Hunt song “Hard To Forget,” though…

Hard To Forget – Sam Hunt

There stands the glass
That will ease all my pain
That will settle my brain
It’s my first one today
There stands the glass
That-that relieves all my pain
That-that will settle my brain
It’s-it’s my first one today
Hey

I saw your sister at work
I saw your mama at church
I’m pretty sure I saw your car at the mall
I see your face in the clouds
I smell your perfume in crowds
I swear your number’s all my phone wants to call

It’s kinda funny how I can’t seem
To get away from you
It’s almost like you don’t want me to

You’ve got a cold heart and the cold hard truth
I got a bottle of whiskey but I’ve got no proof
That you showed up tonight in that dress
Just to mess with my head
So much for so long, out of sight, out of mind
Girl you’re looking so good, it’s driving me out of mine
Aw you’re breaking my heart
Baby you’re playing hard to forget

Told me to leave all your things
Out on the porch on the swing
You’d come and grab them by the end of the week
It’s just some jeans and a shirt
But it’s a whole lot of hurt
I think I know why you’ve been dragging your feet

Ain’t it funny how I can’t seem
To get away from you
It’s almost like you don’t want me to

You’ve got a cold heart and the cold hard truth
I got a bottle of whiskey but I’ve got no proof
That you showed up tonight in that dress
Just to mess with my head
So much for so long, out of sight, out of mind
Girl you’re looking so good, it’s driving me out of mine
Aw you’re breaking my heart
Baby you’re playing hard to forget

There stands the glass
That-that will ease all my pain
That-that will settle my brain
It’s-it’s my first one today

You’ve got a cold heart and the cold hard truth
I got a bottle of whiskey but I’ve got no proof
That you showed up tonight in that dress
Just to mess with my head
So much for so long, out of sight, out of mind
Girl you’re looking so good, it’s driving me out of mine
Aw you’re breaking my heart
Baby you’re playing hard to forget

Aw honey I’m falling apart
You’re playing hard to forget
