As she sings “2002,” the 27-year-old references late ’90s/early 2000s chart-toppers throughout the chorus — songs that a young Anne-Marie and friends used to sing so fondly — including JAY-Z’s “99 Problems,” *NSYNC’s “Bye, Bye, Bye” and Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops!…I Did It Again.”

Flavours of tropical house and reggaeton lend some warmth, but combined with the fact she’s pinched her smokey, slightly croaky vocal style from Rihanna, they result in some cold sweat-inducing cultural appropriation too (her pronunciation of “two shots fired” on Alarm is, well, alarming).

Judging by the views and streams Anne-Marie has amassed so far, both for collaborations (Rudimental, Clean Bandit and, more lately, Marshmello) and her own tracks, the conclusion would have to be yes, and not to get our thongs in a twist about cultural appropriation.

Anne Marie, who became known in 2016 with “Rockabye” in duet with Clean Bandit but also solo with the tubes “Alarm” and “Ciao Adios”, is finally taking its first steps with this album. Very popular, especially in the United Kingdom and Australia, the artist should know with “Speak Your Mind” (which contains no less than 17 titles!) A nice commercial success. Ultimate consecration, she even performed at the Royal Albert Hall during the concert given in honor of the 92 years of Queen Elizabeth II, a few days ago!

The singer, who released her first album Speak Your Mind on April 27, told music publication The Line of Best Fit: “I’ve never ever just been attracted to men. I’ve never just been attracted to women.”

[Verse 1]
I will always remember
The day you kissed my lips
Light as a feather
And it went just like this
No, it’s never been better
Than the summer of 2002 (ooh)
Uh, we were only eleven
But acting like grown-ups
Like we are in the present
Drinking from plastic cups
Singing, “Love is forever and ever”
Well, I guess that was true

[Pre-Chorus]
Dancing on the hood in the middle of the woods
On an old Mustang, where we sang
Songs with all our childhood friends
And it went like this, say

[Chorus]
Oops, I got 99 problems singing bye, bye, bye
Hold up, if you wanna go and take a ride with me
Better hit me, baby, one more time, uh
Paint a picture for you and me
On the days when we were young, uh
Singing at the top of both our lungs

[Verse 2]
Now we’re under the covers
Fast forward to eighteen
We are more than lovers
Yeah, we are all we need
When we’re holding each other
I’m taken back to 2002 (ooh)
Yeah

[Pre-Chorus]
Dancing on the hood in the middle of the woods
On an old Mustang, where we sang
Songs with all our childhood friends
And it went like this, say

[Chorus]
Oops, I got 99 problems singing bye, bye, bye
Hold up, if you wanna go and take a ride with me
Better hit me, baby, one more time, uh
Paint a picture for you and me
On the days when we were young, uh
Singing at the top of both our lungs
On the day we fell in love
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
On the day we fell in love
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

[Pre-Chorus]
Dancing on the hood in the middle of the woods
On an old Mustang, where we sang
Songs with all our childhood friends
Oh, now

[Chorus]
Oops, I got 99 problems singing bye, bye, bye
Hold up, if you wanna go and take a ride with me
Better hit me, baby, one more time
Paint a picture for you and me
On the days when we were young, uh
Singing at the top of both our lungs
On the day we fell in love
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
On the day we fell in love
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
On the day we fell in love
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
On the day we fell in love
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
On the day we fell in love, love, love
